Customer: Network operator Fastweb, Italy
Project: Central Office, Rome
Application: Point-to-point fiber optic network for FTTH service, optical distribution frame, single circuit management.
Challenge
With its high affinity for the media, Italy is predestined for FTTH (Fiber To The Home) service. Various suppliers are now working on using fiber optics to dock households to communication services of the present and future. In many network operators’ central locations, large quantities of optical fibers must be connected and distributed.
Solution
In September 2009, Fastweb approached R&M to inquire about an innovative FTTH solution. The company was unable to meet the requirements for the planned central office in Rome with standard products so it turned to products available at the time only as design sketches.
R&M focused on one of its major strengths, its ability to develop prototypes quickly. Two months later the project was all set to begin. The convincing solution is based on the newly developed SCM (Single Circuit Management) system combined with the new and extremely adaptable ODF (Optical Distribution Frame).
Result
Fastweb managed to upgrade its fiber optic network in the spring of 2010 at extraordinarily short notice and with astounding flexibility. Fastweb is the first provider in Italy to provide FTTH service to households at a rate of 100 Mbps. The network operator has a unique, innovative and flexible point-to-point solution.
The project succeeded thanks to the classic strengths of R&M, namely its flexibility, quality and no-compromise customer orientation, and to the smooth collaboration with FIMAR.
