Customer: IBM and ETH Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland
Project: New Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center, Rüschlikon/Zurich
Application: Structured building cabling with shielded Cat. 7 / Cat. 6A copper cabling for research institute
Challenge
“Noise-free” – absolutely free from all interference. That was a very important requirement for the Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center that IBM opened up in Rüschlikon near Zurich together with the ETH Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.
There’s something very special about this new project: It houses six “noise-free labs” – cleanrooms for very sensitive measurements and experiments. They are shielded from all external disturbances such as dust, vibration, acoustic noise, UV radiation, electromagnetic fields and temperature fluctuations.
The planners made correspondingly high demands of the cabling. In addition to top performance for transmitting sensitive measurements, perfect shielding and grounding had to be ensured to avoid the development of electromagnetic fields in the labs.
Solution
The project partners selected the current R&M solution with the innovative Cat. 6A module. Besides the required performance, the partners were also impressed with the exceptional shielding of the module and the entire cabling system.
The quality, fast assembly and ease of handling were also key in making the decision to install the R&M system. R&M assisted all those involved during the installation phase with on-site instructions, reference measurements and further support services. The continual presence of the R&M experts contributed to making sure the project could be completed on schedule, safely and successfully.
Result
With a system guarantee provided by R&M over 25 years, the IBM and ETH researchers can research the future of nanotechnology securely and confidently. The Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center will no doubt spawn further groundbreaking discoveries in the future.
The overall contractor for the construction project, Steiner AG, and the installation partner, Burkhalter AG, have now experienced at first hand the top-performing copper cabling of all times – Cat. 6A from R&M. They are now fully conversant with assembly and can use this experience in other projects.
